File formats can be confusing. You may receive a file with an extension you don't recognize, need to open it in another application, or simply need it in a different format. Most conversion tools focus only on the conversion itself and leave you to figure out what the file actually is.

Ident Convert takes a different approach. Instead of starting with a long list of conversion options, we start with the file — we identify its format, explain what it's used for, and show the conversion options that make sense for that type of file. No unnecessary steps. No account required.

Ident Convert uses different processing methods depending on the type of conversion. Lightweight operations are handled directly in the browser where possible. More demanding conversions — video, audio, and document processing — are handled by dedicated backend infrastructure.

Our processing stack includes established tools such as FFmpeg, LibreOffice, and Pandoc, with the frontend running on Next.js and the conversion backend running separately from the web application. This separation keeps the interface lightweight while heavier processing happens where it's better suited.

Your files are an important part of how Ident Convert works, so we aim to keep the process clear and predictable. Depending on the conversion, a file may need to be processed on our backend infrastructure. Files are handled only as required to provide the requested conversion.
