02 / what you get

What happens to your data

Kept

  • A list of mappings becomes the records, with the keys of each mapping as fields
  • Anchors and aliases are resolved, so repeated values are written out in full
  • Saved as UTF-8 with a BOM, so Excel shows Ukrainian, Polish and other non-Latin letters correctly

Good to know

  • Only one YAML document per file is supported; a file with several documents separated by --- fails.
  • Comments are not part of the data and are dropped.
  • Commas, quotes and line breaks inside a value are wrapped in quotes automatically so the columns stay aligned.
  • Nested objects and lists cannot sit in a table cell, so they are written into the cell as JSON text, for example {"city":"Lviv"}.

03 / formats

YAML vs CSV

YAML

A YAML file stores structured data in a clean, indentation-based format designed to be easy for humans to read and write. It's the go-to format for configuration files, so you'll often need to edit or convert one when setting up developer tools.

Used in: Docker · CI/CD pipelines · Kubernetes configs

CSV

A CSV (Comma-Separated Values) file stores tabular data as plain text — each line is a row, commas separate the columns. It's the most universal way to move spreadsheet data between programs: Excel, Google Sheets, databases, and most apps can all read it.

Used in: Excel & Sheets exports · Database exports · Data sharing
