What happens to your data

Kept

  • DTS surround files are supported
  • Saved as Dolby Digital (AC3) at 448 kbps, the DVD standard, with stereo or 5.1 channels kept
  • 5.1 surround is kept in the AC3

Good to know

  • DTS files carry no title, artist or album tags, so there is nothing to copy over.
  • The bitrate is fixed at 448 kbps even for stereo, so the file is about 3.4 MB per minute, far bigger than an MP3.
  • AC3 only supports 32, 44.1 and 48 kHz, so other sample rates are converted.
  • AC3 files cannot hold title, artist or album tags.
  • Both formats compress with quality loss, so every conversion costs a little quality. Keep your DTS original.

DTS vs AC3

DTS

A DTS file is raw DTS surround audio, the main competitor to Dolby Digital on DVDs and Blu-rays. It usually holds 5.1 surround and plays in VLC and home-theater gear, but not in most phone or computer players.

AC3

An AC3 file is Dolby Digital audio, the sound format of DVDs, TV broadcasts and many home-theater systems. It holds stereo or 5.1 surround and is usually pulled out of a video file.
