What happens to your data

Kept

  • Sample rate and channels (mono, stereo, even 5.1 surround) are read as they are
  • Hi-res FLAC files (24-bit, 96 kHz) are supported
  • Saved as OGG Vorbis at quality 6, roughly 192 kbps, in a free and open format
  • Works with mono, low sample rates and hi-res files too
  • Title, artist and album tags are carried over

Good to know

  • Apple's built-in apps may not play OGG. Use M4A or MP3 for iPhone.
  • Embedded cover art is not carried over. Only the sound is converted.
  • Lossy compression permanently removes some detail. Keep your original if you want to archive the recording.

OGG

An OGG file is an open-source compressed audio format, an alternative to MP3 that's free of licensing restrictions. Common in video games, open-source software, and some streaming services.
