What happens to your data

Kept

  • Sample rate and channels (mono, stereo, even 5.1 surround) are read as they are
  • Hi-res FLAC files (24-bit, 96 kHz) are supported
  • Saved as a raw AAC (ADTS) stream at 192 kbps

Good to know

  • A raw .aac file has no room for title, artist or album tags. Choose M4A if you want the tags kept.
  • Some players show a slightly wrong length for raw AAC files and cannot jump around in them as smoothly as in M4A.
  • Embedded cover art is not carried over. Only the sound is converted.
  • Lossy compression permanently removes some detail. Keep your original if you want to archive the recording.

FLAC vs AAC

FLAC

A FLAC file compresses audio without losing any quality (lossless) — smaller than WAV, but still identical to the original when played back. The go-to format for audiophiles and music archiving.

Used in: Music archiving · Audiophile listening · High-quality downloads

AAC

An AAC file is a compressed audio format similar to MP3 but with better sound quality at the same bitrate. It's the standard for streaming audio, YouTube, and most modern devices' default recordings.
