02 / what you get

What happens to your data

Kept

  • All glyphs, the character map (including Cyrillic and other non-Latin letters) and the font's name and style
  • Letter widths and vertical metrics, so text sets at the same size and line height

Good to know

  • OTF fonts with PostScript (CFF) outlines have to be redrawn into TrueType curves. Shapes stay visually the same, but tiny differences at very large sizes are possible.
  • Kerning (GPOS), ligatures and alternate glyphs (GSUB) and hinting are not carried over. For a website, convert to WOFF2 instead, which keeps everything.
  • Converting a font does not change its license. Make sure the license allows web embedding or modification before you publish the result.
  • Files up to 4 MB are supported, which covers most Latin, Cyrillic and Greek fonts but not large CJK fonts.

OTF vs TTF

OTF

An OTF (OpenType Font) file is a newer, more advanced font format that supports richer typography features — ligatures, alternate glyphs, and multi-language support. Most modern professional fonts are distributed as OTF.

Used in: Modern type foundries · Professional design tools · Multi-language typography

TTF

A TTF (TrueType Font) file is one of the most common font formats — most operating systems and design tools can install and use it directly. It's usually where you start when installing a font manually.

Used in: Desktop font installs · Design software (Figma, Photoshop) · Legacy Windows apps
