02 / what you get

What happens to your data

Kept

  • Everything in the font: glyphs, kerning, ligatures, alternates and hinting, because only the packaging changes
  • The original PostScript (CFF) outlines stay as they are, with no redrawing
  • A smaller file, typically 30–50% smaller than the OTF

Good to know

  • WOFF is the older web format. If you only target modern browsers, WOFF2 compresses further.
  • Converting a font does not change its license. Make sure the license allows web embedding or modification before you publish the result.
  • Files up to 4 MB are supported, which covers most Latin, Cyrillic and Greek fonts but not large CJK fonts.

OTF vs WOFF

OTF

An OTF (OpenType Font) file is a newer, more advanced font format that supports richer typography features — ligatures, alternate glyphs, and multi-language support. Most modern professional fonts are distributed as OTF.

Used in: Modern type foundries · Professional design tools · Multi-language typography

WOFF

A WOFF (Web Open Font Format) file is a compressed font format built specifically for websites — smaller than TTF/OTF, so pages load faster. It's the older of the two web font formats, but still widely supported.

Used in: Website @font-face · Older browser support · CSS web fonts
