What happens to your data

Kept

  • The text as normal editable paragraphs, with bullet and numbered lists and simple tables rebuilt from how they are laid out on the page
  • A Rich Text file that almost every word processor opens, including WordPad and very old programs

Good to know

  • Only text is taken: images, fonts, colors and the page design do not come over.
  • A PDF has no real headings or bold text inside, so everything arrives as regular text.
  • Paragraphs, lists and tables are guessed from the layout. Pages with several columns or complex tables can come out mixed up, so check the result.
  • Page numbers and headers or footers that repeat on most pages of a longer file are removed.
  • A scanned PDF (pages that are pictures of text) has no text to take, so it is refused. There is no OCR.
  • For an exact copy of how the PDF looks, convert it to PNG or JPG instead.
  • Password-protected PDF files are not supported.
  • RTF is an old format: the file is noticeably larger than a DOCX, and newer features are simplified.
  • Files up to 300 MB are accepted.

PDF vs RTF

PDF

A PDF file locks in exact layout, fonts, and pagination so it looks identical on every device — the standard for sharing finished documents, contracts, and anything meant to be printed rather than edited.

Used in: Sharing finished documents · Printing · Contracts & forms

RTF

An RTF file is a lightly-formatted text format (bold, italic, fonts, basic layout) that almost any word processor can open, designed specifically for cross-application compatibility.

Used in: Cross-application documents · Legacy word processors
