02 / what you get

What happens to your data

Kept

  • Every line break is kept, and a blank line starts a new paragraph
  • Columns lined up with spaces or tabs keep their alignment in a monospaced block
  • UTF-8 and UTF-16 files are read directly, and old Windows code pages (including Cyrillic Windows-1251) are detected automatically
  • A Word 97-2003 file for old versions of Word and software that cannot open DOCX
  • Headers, footers, tables and pictures are kept

Good to know

  • A text file has no fonts or styles, so the document uses the standard ones.
  • The old format cannot hold newer Word features, so they are simplified. The file is also larger than a DOCX.
  • Files up to 300 MB are accepted.

TXT vs DOC

TXT

A TXT file is plain, unformatted text — no fonts, no styling, no structure beyond line breaks. The simplest and most universal document format there is, readable by literally anything.

Used in: Plain notes · Logs · Universal compatibility

DOC

A DOC file is the older, legacy Microsoft Word format (Word 97-2003), stored as a proprietary binary format. Still shows up in old archives and email attachments, but Word itself has defaulted to DOCX since 2007.

Used in: Legacy Word documents · Old email attachments
