02 / what you get

What happens to your data

Kept

  • Dates become readable text, for example 2026-01-15
  • Formulas are exported as the result they last calculated
  • Pretty-printed JSON that any programming language can read
  • With several sheets, every sheet is exported, keyed by its name
  • The first row of each sheet is used as the header

Good to know

  • Colors, fonts, merged cells, charts and images are not part of the data and are dropped.
  • Password-protected workbooks cannot be opened.
  • Anything around the records in the source file (wrapper elements, comments, metadata) is not carried over.
  • With a single sheet the result is a plain array with no sheet name.

XLS vs JSON

XLS

An XLS file is the older Excel workbook format (Excel 97-2003). It still turns up in old exports and archives. Converting it gives you the first sheet as plain data (JSON keeps every sheet), or a modern XLSX.

Used in: Legacy Excel files · Old exports · Archives

JSON

A JSON (JavaScript Object Notation) file stores structured, nested data as readable text — objects, arrays, and key-value pairs. It's the standard format for web APIs and app configuration, so you'll often get one from a developer, an API response, or an app's settings export.

Used in: Web APIs · App configs · Settings exports
