02 / what you get

What happens to your data

Kept

  • Every sheet: a workbook with several sheets becomes one object with a key per sheet name
  • Numbers stay numbers, text stays text, empty cells become empty strings
  • Dates as readable text, for example 2026-01-15
  • Column headers from the first row as the object keys

Good to know

  • A workbook with a single sheet becomes a plain array of row objects, with no sheet name around it.
  • Formulas are exported as their last calculated result.
  • Formatting, merged cells, charts and images are not part of JSON and are dropped.
  • Duplicate column headers overwrite each other in an object, so give every column a unique name first.

XLSX vs JSON

XLSX

An XLSX file is a modern Excel workbook: sheets of cells with numbers, text, formulas and formatting. It is the default for spreadsheets today. Converting it gives you the first sheet as plain data (JSON keeps every sheet), so other tools can read it.

Used in: Excel · Business reports · Financial data

JSON

A JSON (JavaScript Object Notation) file stores structured, nested data as readable text — objects, arrays, and key-value pairs. It's the standard format for web APIs and app configuration, so you'll often get one from a developer, an API response, or an app's settings export.

Used in: Web APIs · App configs · Settings exports
