Kept
- Folders (including empty ones) and file names in any language, such as Cyrillic or Polish, are kept
- File dates and Unix permissions are kept, so a script that was executable stays executable
- The same .tar.gz tarball with the shorter .tgz extension, which some scripts and servers expect
- Opens with tar -xzf on Linux and macOS and with 7-Zip or WinRAR on Windows
Good to know
- Password-protected ZIP files are not supported.
- gzip compresses less tightly than 7Z or XZ, in return it is fast and understood everywhere.
- Links (shortcuts) and special files inside the archive are left out. Only real files and folders are converted.
- Archives up to 300 MB are accepted. An archive that unpacks to more than 500 MB or 20,000 files is refused.
