What happens to your data
Kept
- Folders (including empty ones) and file names in any language, such as Cyrillic or Polish, are kept
- File dates and Unix permissions are kept, so a script that was executable stays executable
- A plain TAR with nothing compressed, the format Linux and Unix tools, Docker and backup scripts expect
Good to know
- Password-protected 7Z files are not supported, including archives that only hide the file names.
- TAR itself does not compress, so the file is about as large as everything inside it. For a smaller file choose TAR.GZ.
- The result is larger than your 7Z file, because the compression is removed.
- Links (shortcuts) and special files inside the archive are left out. Only real files and folders are converted.
- Archives up to 300 MB are accepted. An archive that unpacks to more than 500 MB or 20,000 files is refused.

7Z vs TAR
7Z
A 7Z file is the archive format of the 7-Zip tool. It usually compresses tighter than ZIP, which makes it popular for large downloads and backups, but Windows and macOS can't open it without extra software.
Used in: Large downloads · Backups · Game mods & software
TAR
A TAR file bundles multiple files into one archive without compressing them (the name stands for Tape Archive). It's the standard way to package files on Linux/Unix systems, often combined with gzip compression afterward.
Used in: Linux/Unix file packaging · Docker build contexts · Backup tools
