02 / what you get

What happens to your data

Kept

  • Folders (including empty ones) and file names in any language, such as Cyrillic or Polish, are kept
  • RAR5 and solid archives are supported
  • A plain TAR with nothing compressed, the format Linux and Unix tools, Docker and backup scripts expect

Good to know

  • RAR does not hand over Linux permissions or modification dates, so every file in the result gets today's date and no execute flag.
  • Password-protected RAR files and multi-part archives (.part1.rar, .part2.rar) are not supported.
  • TAR itself does not compress, so the file is about as large as everything inside it. For a smaller file choose TAR.GZ.
  • The result is larger than your RAR file, because the compression is removed.
  • Links (shortcuts) and special files inside the archive are left out. Only real files and folders are converted.
  • Archives up to 300 MB are accepted. An archive that unpacks to more than 500 MB or 20,000 files is refused.

RAR vs TAR

RAR

A RAR file is a proprietary compressed archive format (from WinRAR) — common for software and media shared outside official channels, since it compresses tighter than ZIP but requires a paid license to create.

Used in: Software & media distribution · Older file-sharing sites

TAR

A TAR file bundles multiple files into one archive without compressing them (the name stands for Tape Archive). It's the standard way to package files on Linux/Unix systems, often combined with gzip compression afterward.

Used in: Linux/Unix file packaging · Docker build contexts · Backup tools
