What happens to your data
Kept
- Folders (including empty ones) and file names in any language, such as Cyrillic or Polish, are kept
- File dates and Unix permissions are kept, so a script that was executable stays executable
- Works with .tar.bz2 and .tbz2 archives. A single compressed file such as data.csv.bz2 also works: it goes into the new archive under its original name
- A standard ZIP that opens on Windows, macOS and Linux without extra software
- Files are compressed with Deflate, so the ZIP is smaller than the files inside
Good to know
- ZIP compresses less tightly than BZ2, so the result will be larger than your original file.
- Links (shortcuts) and special files inside the archive are left out. Only real files and folders are converted.
- Archives up to 300 MB are accepted. An archive that unpacks to more than 500 MB or 20,000 files is refused.

BZ2
A .tar.bz2 archive is a TAR archive compressed with bzip2, which compresses tighter than gzip at the cost of being slower. You'll mostly see it for large downloads where file size matters more than speed.
