02 / what you get

What happens to your data

Kept

  • Folders (including empty ones) and file names in any language, such as Cyrillic or Polish, are kept
  • File dates and Unix permissions are kept, so a script that was executable stays executable
  • Works with .tar.gz and .tgz archives. A single compressed file such as data.csv.gz also works: it goes into the new archive under its original name
  • A standard ZIP that opens on Windows, macOS and Linux without extra software
  • Files are compressed with Deflate, so the ZIP is smaller than the files inside

Good to know

  • Links (shortcuts) and special files inside the archive are left out. Only real files and folders are converted.
  • Archives up to 300 MB are accepted. An archive that unpacks to more than 500 MB or 20,000 files is refused.

GZ vs ZIP

GZ

A .tar.gz file (sometimes called a tarball) is a TAR archive that's been compressed with gzip — the most common archive format on Linux and for open-source software downloads.

Used in: Linux software downloads · Open-source releases · Server backups

ZIP

A ZIP file bundles multiple files and folders into one compressed archive — the most universal archive format, readable natively on Windows, Mac, and Linux without installing anything extra.

Used in: File sharing · Software downloads · Email attachments
