What happens to your data
Kept
- The first row is used as the header and empty lines are skipped
- The separator is detected for you (comma, semicolon, tab or pipe), so exports from regional Excel versions work
- Quoted cells that contain separators, quotes or line breaks are read correctly
- A clean Excel 97-2003 workbook with one sheet, where plain numbers are real numeric cells you can sum and sort
- Values like 007 or phone numbers stay text, so leading zeros are not lost
Good to know
- Values arrive as text and become numbers only where that is unambiguous and the target can hold numbers.
- The XLS format holds at most 65,536 rows and 256 columns per sheet, and the result is plain values on one sheet named Sheet1 with no formulas or styles.

CSV vs XLS
CSV
A CSV (Comma-Separated Values) file stores tabular data as plain text — each line is a row, commas separate the columns. It's the most universal way to move spreadsheet data between programs: Excel, Google Sheets, databases, and most apps can all read it.

XLS
An XLS file is the older Excel workbook format (Excel 97-2003). It still turns up in old exports and archives. Converting it gives you the first sheet as plain data (JSON keeps every sheet), or a modern XLSX.
