02 / what you get

What happens to your data

Kept

  • The repeating elements (for example every <book>) become the records, and their child tags become fields
  • Attributes are kept as fields named @_attribute, for example @_id
  • Codes with leading zeros, like 007, stay text instead of turning into 7
  • A clean Excel 97-2003 workbook with one sheet, where plain numbers are real numeric cells you can sum and sort

Good to know

  • Only the repeating records are exported. The wrapper elements around them (like <catalog>) are dropped.
  • Text mixed with tags inside one element is read as a #text field.
  • The XLS format holds at most 65,536 rows and 256 columns per sheet, and the result is plain values on one sheet named Sheet1 with no formulas or styles.
  • Nested objects and lists cannot sit in a table cell, so they are written into the cell as JSON text, for example {"city":"Lviv"}.

XML vs XLS

XML

An XML (Extensible Markup Language) file stores structured data using custom, nested tags, similar to HTML. It's verbose but strict, which makes it reliable for automated systems — common in enterprise software, government forms, and legacy data exports.

Used in: Enterprise systems · Government forms · Legacy data exports

XLS

An XLS file is the older Excel workbook format (Excel 97-2003). It still turns up in old exports and archives. Converting it gives you the first sheet as plain data (JSON keeps every sheet), or a modern XLSX.

Used in: Legacy Excel files · Old exports · Archives
