02 / what you get

What happens to your data

Kept

  • The first row is used as the header and empty lines are skipped
  • The separator is detected for you (comma, semicolon, tab or pipe), so exports from regional Excel versions work
  • Quoted cells that contain separators, quotes or line breaks are read correctly
  • Saved as UTF-8 with a BOM, with tabs between columns, so commas inside values need no quoting
  • Values are copied as they are; only the separator changes

Good to know

  • Values arrive as text and become numbers only where that is unambiguous and the target can hold numbers.
  • Tabs and line breaks inside a value are wrapped in quotes automatically so the columns stay aligned.

CSV vs TSV

CSV

A CSV (Comma-Separated Values) file stores tabular data as plain text — each line is a row, commas separate the columns. It's the most universal way to move spreadsheet data between programs: Excel, Google Sheets, databases, and most apps can all read it.

Used in: Excel & Sheets exports · Database exports · Data sharing

TSV

A TSV (Tab-Separated Values) file is just like CSV, but it uses tabs instead of commas to separate columns. It's handy when the data itself contains commas — like addresses or descriptions — since tabs won't get confused with the content.

Used in: Spreadsheet exports · Data containing commas · Bioinformatics data
