Good to know

  • Plain text has no formatting: bold, italic, colors, fonts, headers, footers and comments are dropped.
  • Pictures are dropped, and a link keeps its words but not its address.
  • Password-protected documents are not supported, and macros inside the file are not run.
  • Files up to 300 MB are accepted.

DOC vs TXT

DOC

A DOC file is the older, legacy Microsoft Word format (Word 97-2003), stored as a proprietary binary format. Still shows up in old archives and email attachments, but Word itself has defaulted to DOCX since 2007.

Used in: Legacy Word documents · Old email attachments

TXT

A TXT file is plain, unformatted text — no fonts, no styling, no structure beyond line breaks. The simplest and most universal document format there is, readable by literally anything.

Used in: Plain notes · Logs · Universal compatibility
