02 / what you get

What happens to your data

Kept

  • Headings, bold and italic, lists, tables, footnotes and links are kept as real structure
  • Old Word 97-2003 files are read, including ones saved by very old versions of Word
  • GitHub-style Markdown (tables use | pipes) for README files, notes apps, static sites and documentation

Good to know

  • Fonts, colors, page size, headers, footers and comments are not part of this format and are dropped.
  • Only the text structure is kept, so the result will not look like the printed page.
  • If the document has pictures, you get a ZIP with the .md file and a media folder. Without pictures you get a single .md file.
  • Password-protected documents are not supported, and macros inside the file are not run.
  • Files up to 300 MB are accepted.

DOC vs MD

DOC

A DOC file is the older, legacy Microsoft Word format (Word 97-2003), stored as a proprietary binary format. Still shows up in old archives and email attachments, but Word itself has defaulted to DOCX since 2007.

Used in: Legacy Word documents · Old email attachments

MD

A Markdown (MD) file is plain text with lightweight formatting syntax (#, **bold**, lists) — the standard for documentation, READMEs, and technical writing that needs to stay readable as raw text.

Used in: Documentation · READMEs · Technical writing · Static site generators
