Good to know
- Only the still photo is converted. The short video of a Live Photo is not included.
- BMP is uncompressed, so the file is far larger than JPG or PNG.
- BMP has no transparency.
- The source is already compressed, so converting to a lossless format makes the file bigger without adding any detail.
- Metadata such as EXIF and the GPS location is not copied into the new file.

HEIC vs BMP
HEIC
A HEIC file is the photo format iPhones and newer iPads use by default (also called HEIF). It keeps photo quality at about half the size of a JPG, but many Windows apps, websites and email services can't open it — which is why people convert it to JPG or PNG.

BMP
A BMP file stores images with little to no compression, which means large file sizes but one of the simplest possible formats to read. It's an older Windows format you'll mostly encounter in legacy software or basic screenshot tools.
