02 / what you get

What happens to your data

Kept

  • A list of objects becomes the records; if the list sits inside an object (for example {"items": [...]}), the first list found is used
  • Keys keep their original order, and keys that appear only in later objects are not lost
  • A readable YAML list where each record is an item and each field is a key
  • null stays null and true/false stay booleans
  • Nested objects and lists keep their structure.

Good to know

  • The file must be strict JSON: comments, trailing commas and single quotes make it invalid and the conversion will fail with the position of the error.
  • Dates and numbers that were text are quoted where YAML would otherwise change their meaning, such as '007'.

JSON vs YAML

JSON

A JSON (JavaScript Object Notation) file stores structured, nested data as readable text — objects, arrays, and key-value pairs. It's the standard format for web APIs and app configuration, so you'll often get one from a developer, an API response, or an app's settings export.

Used in: Web APIs · App configs · Settings exports

YAML

A YAML file stores structured data in a clean, indentation-based format designed to be easy for humans to read and write. It's the go-to format for configuration files, so you'll often need to edit or convert one when setting up developer tools.

Used in: Docker · CI/CD pipelines · Kubernetes configs
