02 / what you get
What happens to your data
Kept
- A RAW photo from a Nikon camera, converted at full resolution
- Developed with the camera's own white balance into standard 8-bit sRGB color, ready to view and share
- Saved as WebP at quality 80, usually much smaller than JPG or PNG at the same look
- Transparency is kept
Good to know
- The photo is developed automatically with the camera's white balance. There are no exposure, color or noise edits, so for fine control develop it in Lightroom or Camera Raw instead.
- Support depends on the camera model: very new cameras can fail until they are supported. Files that were only renamed from another format are rejected.
- Very old software and some printers cannot open WebP. Use JPG or PNG there.
- Metadata such as EXIF and the GPS location is not copied into the new file.

NEF vs WEBP
NEF
A NEF file is a RAW photo from a Nikon camera. It holds the unprocessed sensor data, so it keeps maximum detail for editing, but it is huge and most apps and websites can't open it. Converting it gives you a normal image, developed with the camera's own white balance.

WEBP
A WebP file is a modern image format from Google that compresses smaller than JPG or PNG at the same quality, while supporting both lossy and lossless modes plus transparency. It's now the format most websites serve automatically to speed up page loads.
