What happens to your data

Kept

  • The photo's rotation (EXIF orientation) is applied, so it comes out the right way up
  • Saved as WebP at quality 80, usually much smaller than JPG or PNG at the same look
  • Transparency is kept

Good to know

  • A JPG has already lost some detail to compression, and no conversion can bring it back.
  • Very old software and some printers cannot open WebP. Use JPG or PNG there.
  • Both formats are lossy, so every conversion costs a little quality. Keep your original file.
  • Metadata such as EXIF and the GPS location is not copied into the new file.

JPG vs WEBP

JPG

A JPG (or JPEG) file is the most common photo format — it compresses images by slightly reducing quality to keep file sizes small. It's what your phone camera, most cameras, and the web use by default for photos.

Used in: Photos & camera exports · Web pages & email · Social media uploads

WEBP

A WebP file is a modern image format from Google that compresses smaller than JPG or PNG at the same quality, while supporting both lossy and lossless modes plus transparency. It's now the format most websites serve automatically to speed up page loads.

Used in: Modern websites · Faster page loads · Automatic image optimization
