02 / what you get

What happens to your data

Kept

  • The repeating elements (for example every <book>) become the records, and their child tags become fields
  • Attributes are kept as fields named @_attribute, for example @_id
  • Codes with leading zeros, like 007, stay text instead of turning into 7
  • Saved as UTF-8 with a BOM, with tabs between columns, so commas inside values need no quoting

Good to know

  • Only the repeating records are exported. The wrapper elements around them (like <catalog>) are dropped.
  • Text mixed with tags inside one element is read as a #text field.
  • Tabs and line breaks inside a value are wrapped in quotes automatically so the columns stay aligned.
  • Nested objects and lists cannot sit in a table cell, so they are written into the cell as JSON text, for example {"city":"Lviv"}.

XML vs TSV

XML

An XML (Extensible Markup Language) file stores structured data using custom, nested tags, similar to HTML. It's verbose but strict, which makes it reliable for automated systems — common in enterprise software, government forms, and legacy data exports.

Used in: Enterprise systems · Government forms · Legacy data exports

TSV

A TSV (Tab-Separated Values) file is just like CSV, but it uses tabs instead of commas to separate columns. It's handy when the data itself contains commas — like addresses or descriptions — since tabs won't get confused with the content.

Used in: Spreadsheet exports · Data containing commas · Bioinformatics data
