What happens to your data
Kept
- AMR voice recordings from phones and call recorders are supported
- Saved as MP3 at 192 kbps, about 1.4 MB per minute, a good balance of quality and size
- Plays on every phone, car stereo and player
Good to know
- AMR is 8 kHz mono, made for speech. The result stays 8 kHz mono, so converting cannot make the recording sound better.
- MP3 supports 48 kHz at most, so a 96 kHz file is reduced to 48 kHz, and surround sound (5.1) is mixed down to stereo.
- Both formats compress with quality loss, so every conversion costs a little quality. Keep your AMR original.

AMR vs MP3
AMR
An AMR file is a voice-only format built for mobile phones. It's tiny and low quality (8 kHz, made for speech), and shows up in old phone voice recordings, voice memos and call recordings.
Used in: Old phone voice recordings · Android call recorders · Voice messages
MP3
An MP3 file is the most common compressed audio format — small file size, works everywhere, though it loses some audio quality in the process. It's what you'll get from most music downloads, podcasts, and voice recordings.
Used in: Music downloads · Podcasts · Universal playback
