02 / what you get

What happens to your data

Kept

  • Every row and column of the first sheet, with the first row as the header
  • Commas inside cells need no quoting, because columns are split by tabs
  • Numbers, text and readable dates (2026-01-15)
  • Non-Latin letters: saved as UTF-8 with a BOM so Excel opens it correctly

Good to know

  • Only the first sheet is converted. If your workbook has several sheets, move the one you need to the front in Excel first, or convert to JSON, which keeps every sheet.
  • Tabs and line breaks inside a cell are wrapped in quotes automatically, so the table does not break.
  • Formulas are saved as their calculated result; formatting, charts and images are dropped.
  • Some tools only accept CSV. If an import asks for .csv, use XLSX to CSV instead.

XLSX vs TSV

XLSX

An XLSX file is a modern Excel workbook: sheets of cells with numbers, text, formulas and formatting. It is the default for spreadsheets today. Converting it gives you the first sheet as plain data (JSON keeps every sheet), so other tools can read it.

Used in: Excel · Business reports · Financial data

TSV

A TSV (Tab-Separated Values) file is just like CSV, but it uses tabs instead of commas to separate columns. It's handy when the data itself contains commas — like addresses or descriptions — since tabs won't get confused with the content.

Used in: Spreadsheet exports · Data containing commas · Bioinformatics data
