What happens to your data

Kept

  • The photo's rotation (EXIF orientation) is applied, so it comes out the right way up
  • One .ico file with six sizes inside: 16, 32, 48, 64, 128 and 256 pixels, as Windows and browsers expect
  • Transparency is kept

Good to know

  • A JPG has already lost some detail to compression, and no conversion can bring it back.
  • Icons are square. A picture that is not square is fitted inside the square with transparent padding, not cropped.
  • For a sharp result start from a square image of at least 256×256 pixels.
  • Metadata such as EXIF and the GPS location is not copied into the new file.

JPG vs ICO

JPG

A JPG (or JPEG) file is the most common photo format — it compresses images by slightly reducing quality to keep file sizes small. It's what your phone camera, most cameras, and the web use by default for photos.

Used in: Photos & camera exports · Web pages & email · Social media uploads

ICO

An ICO file bundles one or more small icon images into a single file, traditionally used for Windows application and file-type icons. It's still the required format for website favicons today.

Used in: Website favicons · Windows app icons · Desktop shortcuts
