- A JPG has already lost some detail to compression, and no conversion can bring it back.
- GIF has only 256 colors, so photos show banding and lose detail. It suits logos and flat graphics better.
- Transparency is on or off: soft, semi-transparent edges become hard edges.
- Metadata such as EXIF and the GPS location is not copied into the new file.
