What happens to your data

Kept

  • Both AAC and Apple Lossless (ALAC) M4A files are supported
  • iPhone voice memos and iTunes / Apple Music files work
  • Saved as an iPhone ringtone (AAC in an iTunes-style MP4) at 192 kbps
  • The first 30 seconds are kept, safely under the 40-second limit of iOS ringtones
  • Title, artist and album tags are carried over

Good to know

  • Copy-protected (DRM) files cannot be converted.
  • The ringtone always starts at the beginning of the file. To use another part of the song, trim the audio first.
  • To install it, add the .m4r to your iPhone in Finder (Mac) or the Apple Devices app / iTunes (Windows), then pick it in Settings > Sounds & Haptics.
  • Embedded cover art is not carried over. Only the sound is converted.
  • Lossy compression permanently removes some detail. Keep your original if you want to archive the recording.

M4A vs M4R

M4A

An M4A file is a compressed audio format (usually AAC inside an MP4 container) used by Apple's ecosystem — iTunes, Apple Music, and voice memos on iPhone all default to it. Slightly better quality than MP3 at the same file size.

Used in: Apple Music & iTunes · iPhone voice memos · Audiobooks

M4R

An M4R file is an iPhone ringtone: AAC audio in an Apple MP4 container, renamed to .m4r. iPhones only accept ringtones shorter than 40 seconds.
