02 / what you get

What happens to your data

Kept

  • Both AAC and Apple Lossless (ALAC) M4A files are supported
  • iPhone voice memos and iTunes / Apple Music files work
  • Saved as Opus at 128 kbps, which usually sounds as good as a much larger MP3
  • Title, artist and album tags are carried over

Good to know

  • Copy-protected (DRM) files cannot be converted.
  • Opus always runs at 48 kHz, so other sample rates are converted.
  • Older players and some Apple apps cannot open .opus. Use MP3 or M4A there.
  • Embedded cover art is not carried over. Only the sound is converted.
  • Lossy compression permanently removes some detail. Keep your original if you want to archive the recording.

M4A vs OPUS

M4A

An M4A file is a compressed audio format (usually AAC inside an MP4 container) used by Apple's ecosystem — iTunes, Apple Music, and voice memos on iPhone all default to it. Slightly better quality than MP3 at the same file size.

Used in: Apple Music & iTunes · iPhone voice memos · Audiobooks

OPUS

An OPUS file uses one of the most efficient audio codecs available today — smaller files than MP3 at equal quality, especially good for voice. It's what WhatsApp voice messages and Discord calls use under the hood.

Used in: Voice messages (WhatsApp) · Discord & voice calls · Modern streaming
