02 / what you get

What happens to your data

Kept

  • Constant and variable bitrate MP3 files of any length are supported
  • Saved as uncompressed 16-bit AIFF with the original sample rate and channels

Good to know

  • AIFF files are big, about 10 MB per minute for CD-quality stereo.
  • AIFF only keeps the title tag. Artist and album are dropped.
  • A 24-bit hi-res file is reduced to 16-bit.
  • Embedded cover art is not carried over. Only the sound is converted.
  • The source is already compressed with quality loss. The new file keeps it exactly as it is, it does not bring back what was lost, and it gets much bigger.

MP3 vs AIFF

MP3

An MP3 file is the most common compressed audio format — small file size, works everywhere, though it loses some audio quality in the process. It's what you'll get from most music downloads, podcasts, and voice recordings.

Used in: Music downloads · Podcasts · Universal playback

AIFF

An AIFF file stores audio uncompressed, similar to WAV, but it's Apple's own format — the default for audio recorded and edited on Mac. Same quality tradeoffs as WAV: large files, no quality loss.

Used in: Mac audio recording · Logic Pro & GarageBand · Professional Apple workflows
