02 / what you get

What happens to your data

Kept

  • Vorbis files (and Opus inside .ogg) are supported
  • Saved as FLAC, which keeps the audio exactly as decoded, in a file usually about half the size of WAV
  • Sample rate, channels and 24-bit depth are kept
  • Title, artist and album tags are carried over

Good to know

  • Embedded cover art is not carried over. Only the sound is converted.
  • The source is already compressed with quality loss. FLAC keeps it exactly as it is, it does not bring back what was lost, and the file gets much bigger.

OGG vs FLAC

OGG

An OGG file is an open-source compressed audio format, an alternative to MP3 that's free of licensing restrictions. Common in video games, open-source software, and some streaming services.

Used in: Video games · Open-source software · Some streaming platforms

FLAC

A FLAC file compresses audio without losing any quality (lossless) — smaller than WAV, but still identical to the original when played back. The go-to format for audiophiles and music archiving.

Used in: Music archiving · Audiophile listening · High-quality downloads
