What happens to your data

Kept

  • Vorbis files (and Opus inside .ogg) are supported
  • Saved as uncompressed 16-bit WAV with the original sample rate and channels
  • Title, artist and album tags are carried over

Good to know

  • WAV files are big, about 10 MB per minute for CD-quality stereo.
  • A 24-bit hi-res file is reduced to 16-bit in the WAV. Choose FLAC to keep 24-bit.
  • Embedded cover art is not carried over. Only the sound is converted.
  • The source is already compressed with quality loss. The new file keeps it exactly as it is, it does not bring back what was lost, and it gets much bigger.

OGG vs WAV

OGG

An OGG file is an open-source compressed audio format, an alternative to MP3 that's free of licensing restrictions. Common in video games, open-source software, and some streaming services.

Used in: Video games · Open-source software · Some streaming platforms

WAV

A WAV file stores audio completely uncompressed — full quality, but large file sizes. It's the standard for professional audio editing, recording, and mastering, where quality matters more than size.

Used in: Audio editing & mastering · Professional recording · Sound design
