What happens to your data

Kept

  • The main image of the texture is converted, with its transparency
  • Saved as a JPG at quality 80, a good balance between sharpness and file size
  • Opens on every device, in every app and on every website

Good to know

  • Only the first image is converted. Mipmaps and cube-map faces are ignored.
  • Textures that store data in separate channels (normal or specular maps) show those channels as colors and look unusual as ordinary pictures.
  • JPG is lossy and has no transparency.
  • Transparent areas become white, because the new format has no transparency.
  • The new format is lossy, so tiny pixel-level differences from the original are expected. Keep the original if you need exact pixels.

DDS vs JPG

DDS

A DDS file is a DirectDraw Surface — a texture format used by games and 3D engines (Unreal, Unity, Source). It is compressed so a graphics card can read it directly, which is why ordinary image viewers often can't open it.

Used in: Game textures · Unreal, Unity, Source · 3D engines

JPG

A JPG (or JPEG) file is the most common photo format — it compresses images by slightly reducing quality to keep file sizes small. It's what your phone camera, most cameras, and the web use by default for photos.

Used in: Photos & camera exports · Web pages & email · Social media uploads
