02 / what you get

What happens to your data

Kept

  • A generic .raw camera file (for example from Panasonic or Leica), converted at full resolution
  • Developed with the camera's own white balance into standard 8-bit sRGB color, ready to view and share
  • Saved as a JPG at quality 80, a good balance between sharpness and file size
  • Opens on every device, in every app and on every website

Good to know

  • The photo is developed automatically with the camera's white balance. There are no exposure, color or noise edits, so for fine control develop it in Lightroom or Camera Raw instead.
  • Support depends on the camera model: very new cameras can fail until they are supported. Files that were only renamed from another format are rejected.
  • JPG is lossy and has no transparency.
  • Metadata such as EXIF and the GPS location is not copied into the new file.

RAW vs JPG

RAW

A .raw file is a camera RAW photo from a Panasonic / Leica (older models) camera. It holds the unprocessed sensor data, so it keeps maximum detail for editing, but most apps and websites can't open it. Converting it gives you a normal image, developed with the camera's own white balance.

JPG

A JPG (or JPEG) file is the most common photo format — it compresses images by slightly reducing quality to keep file sizes small. It's what your phone camera, most cameras, and the web use by default for photos.
