02 / what you get

What happens to your data

Kept

  • The vector graphic is rendered at 300 DPI, so a 320×210 SVG becomes about 1333×875 pixels, sharp enough for print
  • A transparent background stays transparent where the new format allows it
  • Opens everywhere, in chats, forums and old tools

Good to know

  • External images and web fonts linked from the SVG are not loaded. Convert text to outlines (paths) before exporting so it displays correctly.
  • The result is one still picture. Animations in the SVG are not played.
  • GIF has only 256 colors, so photos show banding and lose detail. It suits logos and flat graphics better.
  • Transparency is on or off: soft, semi-transparent edges become hard edges.
  • Sharp lines and small text can show slight artifacts in this format. For crisp logos PNG is the better choice.

SVG vs GIF

SVG

An SVG file describes an image using mathematical shapes and paths instead of pixels, so it stays perfectly sharp at any size. It's the standard format for logos, icons, and illustrations that need to scale without blurring.

Used in: Logos & icons · Illustrations · Scalable UI graphics

GIF

A GIF file stores simple images or short looping animations using a very limited color palette (256 colors). It's the classic format for memes, reaction animations, and short looped clips.
